The sun shone on my face on Monday 10th of February. Some of 6D walked over to the waka van which was parked out the front of the school. We got in the van and were off to Howick beach for our first session of water wise. When we got there I could hear the waves crashing against the shore and there were crickets chirping and seagulls squawking.

After a while I sprinted to the rusty old boat shed. All of us took a life jacket, just for safety. I had to hold my breath as I put mine on. It smelt like dead fish and felt as damp as a snails home. It made me feel bigger. " Everyone on the grass" yelled Mr. Nicholls. So I ran... to the wet green grass. Looking out over the beach I could see the beautiful bright sparkling sand. We all sat on the grass. I could smell some dirty dirt. I heard the seagulls squeaking as they swooped down in different directions. The taste of the salty air made my mouth screw up. Mr. Nicholls gave a long safety speech. I learnt that an optimist has lots of different parts such as the Tell Tails that tell you how well you are sailing. The tiller that steers the boat and the sprit which holds up the sail and lots more.

After Mr. Nicholls safety speech we all got handed some rope. my rope felt wet. First of all we learnt how to tie a figure of eight. Firstly you have to do a loop then you twist it. Next, one end goes through the loop and you pull the ends tight. There were some others. My hands felt like I had been swinging on the monkey bars. I was sitting in the shade and the breeze was giving me goose bumps.
